Joshua Hartman is an intellectual property and international trade attorney focusing on Section 337 investigations of unfair competition before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) and in district courts. Josh represents clients across a broad spectrum of industries, including medical devices, smartphones, consumer products, telecommunications, semiconductors, automotive, and construction equipment. Josh has worked with a diverse array of technologies, including surgical devices, pharmaceuticals, human-computer interfaces, cybersecurity, mobile device management, wireless networking, navigation and traffic management systems, bus architecture and arbitration, power management, heat exchange, and braking systems. In addition to intellectual property, Josh has extensive experience representing clients in complex commercial litigation, including in cases concerning antitrust, false advertising, and business tort claims.
Josh has represented clients in all phases of litigation before the ITC and in district courts. He has argued numerous dispositive and non-dispositive motions and in Markman hearings, presented technology tutorials, taken and defended fact and expert depositions, and authored countless briefs. Josh has particular experience marshaling economic evidence for trial, including working with and against economic experts.
Josh is an active member of the ITC Trial Lawyers Association, for which he currently serves on the Executive Committee. Josh has chaired the Association’s membership committee and editorial committee for the Paul J. Luckern Summer Associate Edition of the 337 Reporter.
Josh has received a Distinguished Legal Writing Award from the Burton Awards for Legal Achievement. In addition, Super Lawyers, Washington, D.C. named Josh a Rising Star in Intellectual Property litigation for four straight years, 2014–2017. Josh’s writing has appeared in the Sedona Conference Journal, IP Litigator, and The Threshold, among other publications.
Before joining the firm, Josh practiced at a large, international law firm, specializing in intellectual property and business litigation at the ITC and in district courts throughout the country. Josh’s clients have received jury verdicts totaling more than a billion dollars and have received complete defense wins.
Josh earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School, where he received a certificate of achievement from the Parker School of Foreign and Comparative Law, served on the Columbia Journal of Law & the Arts, and interned for the Kernochan Center for Law, Media and the Arts. Josh earned his L.L.M. in intellectual property law from the London School of Economics and Political Science, graduating with distinction. While at the LSE, Josh participated in the Oxford International Intellectual Property Law Moot Court Competition.
